Your First 24 Hours: Incheon to a Calm Seoul Arrival
A sequence to follow from the week before departure through immigration, data, airport rail, hotel check-in, and the first meal.
Keep arrival day simple: get from the terminal to your hotel, make the phone and payment basics work, then find dinner nearby. This script assumes you land at Incheon International Airport and stay in Seoul. Substitute your own passport rules, terminal, hotel station, and landing time before copying it; immigration and baggage waits vary.
Planning estimate for the suggested walking sections, not a tracked route. The terminal, hotel location, and airport transfer make this especially variable.
Before you leave
Set up the day.
- Seven days out: check the official visa/K-ETA rule for your passport and, if applicable, the e-Arrival card requirement. The eligible-country K-ETA exemption currently extends through December 31, 2026; eligibility must be checked individually.
- Three days out: save your hotel's Korean name, full address, phone number, nearest station exit, and late-check-in instructions offline. Install Naver Map and Papago; download your eSIM instructions without activating too early.
- Before boarding: carry a physical bank card, a second card kept separately, your passport, insurance details, prescriptions, and a small first-night plan.
Follow the route
Your plan, in order.
Times are suggested planning anchors. Copy the route, then adjust it for your date, opening hours, and pace.
- After landing01
Incheon immigration and baggage
Give arrival its own time: follow Arrivals and immigration signs, collect your bags and confirm the terminal number. Do not book a timed city activity based on scheduled landing time. If immigration asks for an address, show the Korean hotel address rather than trying to pronounce it.
- Arrivals hall02
Connect your phone
Activate the prearranged eSIM or buy a SIM at a staffed counter while airport Wi-Fi is available. Open Naver Map and your hotel booking before leaving the hall. If your phone remains offline, solve that now; city navigation depends on it.
- Before rail03
Choose the right airport route
Enter the hotel name in Naver Map. For Hongdae or western Seoul, the AREX all-stop train may avoid a transfer. For Seoul Station or an easy onward rail connection, compare the nonstop Express. An airport limousine bus can suit a hotel beside a direct stop or a late arrival with large luggage. Check the actual departure time and hotel-side walk.
- At the station04
Ticket and small cash
Buy the ticket required for your chosen train. A rechargeable Tmoney or EZL card is useful for subsequent subway and bus journeys; keep some Korean won available for top-ups and small purchases. Do not assume a foreign contactless bank card can tap straight through all transit gates.
- City arrival05
Station exit to hotel
Follow the saved exit and walking route. At a large interchange, an elevator route may take longer than the shortest path. Check in or leave bags, confirm tomorrow's breakfast options, and locate the closest convenience store. Keep your first outing within the neighborhood.
- First evening06
One uncomplicated meal
Choose a nearby soup-and-rice shop or set-meal restaurant with a visible menu. Order water or tea, eat, and take a short walk. Save your hotel pin before going out so jet lag does not turn the return into a navigation problem.
- Before sleep07
Reset tomorrow
Check the next morning's weather and opening day of your first attraction. Put transport card, phone charger, umbrella, and one payment card together. If the day went slowly, keep the following morning flexible rather than making up missed sights.
Make it your trip
Useful changes.
- Late-night landing: verify the last train and bus while still at the airport. If neither suits, use a licensed taxi queue or an airport hotel.
- Flight via Gimpo or another airport: keep the document, data, card, and hotel steps but replace the rail leg with the route for that airport.
- Entry and health requirements can change. The official immigration and VISITKOREA pages below take precedence over this checklist.
