Before you leave

Choose a meal that suits you.

  • Save the Korean names of two or three dishes you want to try.
  • Choose whether you want rice and stew, noodles, or a quick roll.
  • Check the actual menu, including the portion size and whether rice is included.

At the table

Your plan, in order.

Use these checks when reading a menu. Ingredients, spice and portions vary by kitchen.

  1. Choose
    01

    Pick a meal format

For a quick meal, look for gimbap. For a seated rice meal, consider kimchi jjigae, doenjang jjigae, sundubu jjigae or jeyuk bokkeum. For noodles, consider kalguksu or jjajangmyeon.

  2. Compare
    02

    Kimchi jjigae or doenjang jjigae

Choose kimchi jjigae for tangy fermented kimchi and chili heat. Choose doenjang jjigae for earthy soybean-paste flavor. Both work with rice, and both can contain chili, meat or seafood.

  3. Check
    03

    Read the ingredients

Check meat, seafood, egg and stock ingredients as needed. Tofu and visible vegetables do not establish that a dish is vegetarian. 해물 means seafood; 고기 means meat.

  4. Ask
    04

    Confirm the portion and rice

Ask whether the dish is an individual meal or a shared serving. 밥 포함인가요? means ‘Is rice included?’ 많이 매워요? means ‘Is it very spicy?’

  5. Order
    05

    Show the Korean menu name

Use the Korean name to identify your choice. If you have an ingredient restriction, explain it specifically before ordering. If a sauce is served separately, begin with a little and add more to taste.

Make it your trip

Useful changes.

  • Want a less chili-led meal? Consider jjajangmyeon or a mild kalguksu version, then check the actual preparation.
  • Want a casual combination? Gimbap and tteokbokki offer contrasting textures, but the rice-cake sauce can be hot.
  • Prices and portions vary by restaurant. Read the menu before ordering rather than relying on a nationwide price estimate.
